Shocking UFO Footage Captures ‘Spinning Triangle with Fiery Thruster’ as Former US Intelligence Officer Suggests Possible Extraterrestrial Origin

Image
LOCALS were left spooked after spotting a “spinning triangle with a fiery thruster” circling the skies in Cuba. Shocking footage captured the moment the UFO flew over Cerro, Havana, while seemingly ablaze as residents watched on in fear. The UFO appeared to be equipped with fiery rotating thrusters Credit: JamPress It transformed into a fireball as it spun through the sky in Havana, Cuba Credit: JamPress Even a former US intelligence officer has suggested the bizarre spectacle in broad daylight could potentially be an extraterrestrial. Residents who recorded the extraordinary clip can be heard gasping in sheer disbelief as the mystery object hurtles through the sky. It appears to have a fiery thruster on the back of it which burns at varying intensities. Illuminated by the red-hot glow, the UFO seems to begin tumbling through the air uncontrollably after loitering for a few seconds. The blazing thruster then appears to transform into an unsto...

Why NASA’s New Climate Satellite is Studying Clouds and Phytoplankton

I f you’re trying to spot a phyto plankton , it pays to get exceedingly close. Among the smallest life forms inhabiting both fresh and marine water, phyto plankton can measure as little as one micrometer—or one millionth of a meter. But little things can have a big impact. Blooms of phyto plankton , which are actually a form of microalgae, can spread hundreds of square miles, sometimes doing disastrous damage to fisheries, beaches, drinking water supplies, and entire aquatic ecosystems. To track so sprawling a scourge, you want to stand at a distance—675 km (420 mi.) worth of distance. That’s the altitude at which NASA’s new PACE satellite—short for Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem— will orbit, after its planned launch on Feb. 6.  Formally authorized in 2015, PACE will continue more than two generations’ worth of work NASA began in 1978 when it launched the Nimbus-7 satellite, the first ever spacecraft built to observe phyto plankton in the ocean and study its broade...

Some Experts Want a New ‘Category 6’ For Stronger Hurricanes

A handful of super powerful tropical storms in the last decade and the prospect of more to come has a couple of experts proposing a new category of whopper hurricanes: Category 6. Studies have shown that the strongest tropical storms are getting more intense because of climate change. So the traditional five-category Saffir-Simpson scale, developed more than 50 years ago, may not show the true power of the most muscular storms, two climate scientists suggest in a Monday study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science s . They propose a sixth category for storms with winds that exceed 192 miles per hour (309 kilometers per hour). Currently, storms with winds of 157 mph (252 kilometers per hour) or higher are Category 5. The study's authors said that open-ended grouping doesn't warn people enough about the higher dangers from monstrous storms that flirt with 200 mph (322 kph) or higher. 2024 Marks an Important Year in NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Life

N ot a lot of spacecraft have gone aloft with poetry etched on their sides. Actually, no spacecraft has ever gone aloft with poetry etched on its side—but no spacecraft has ever been quite like NASA’s Europa Clipper. The ship, which is in its final stages of assembly, will launch in October, making a long, six-year journey out to Jupiter. Once there, it will execute a series of close-up flybys of the planet’s Mysterious moon Europa—a world that has an icy shell and a globe-girdling ocean, and is the one place in the solar system outside of Earth that astronomers and exobiologists consider the likeliest to harbor life. That kind of promise is the stuff of cosmic lyricism, and last year, U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón penned some verse in honor of both the moon and the mission, writing in part: [E]ach rivulet, each pulse, each vein. O second moon, we, too, are made of water, Of vast and beckoning seas. We, too, are made of wonders, of great. And ordinary loves, of small invisible world...

James Webb telescope spots potential conditions for life on 2 dwarf planets beyond Neptune

Image
A pair of dwarf planets lurking in the outer reaches of the solar system could still be geologically active, increasing the chances that they could support alien life , a new study suggests. The findings could also change what we know about dwarf planets in general. There are five confirmed dwarf planets in the solar system: Ceres , Haumea, Eris, Makemake and the ex-planet Pluto . All of these planetary pretenders, apart from Ceres, are located in or around the Kuiper Belt, a disk of comets and other small objects beyond the orbit of Neptune . In 2015, NASA's New Horizons probe passed Pluto and spotted signs of recent geological activity in the dwarf planet's thinning atmosphere . Follow-up observations have shown that Pluto is covered in giant, icy volcanoes , which may still be active . Scientists believe that Pluto's surprising geological activity is caused by interactions with its moon Charon. As a result, they thought it was unlikely for other dwarf planets w...

The Problem With Punishing Parents for Their Kids’ Crimes

Image
O n Feb. 6, Jennifer Crumbley was convicted on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the Michigan high school students her son murdered in 2021. Prosecutors presented her as a negligent mother, so distracted by her horses and an extramarital affair that she had ignored glaring signs of her teenager’s mental distress. That she had taken him to a shooting range only a few days before he turned his new gun on his classmates didn’t help her case. “Jennifer Crumbley didn’t pull the trigger that day,” declared prosecutor Marc Keast. “But she is responsible for those deaths.” Crumbley’s case is just one of several in recent years that have produced convictions of parents after their children threatened or committed gun violence. Given the prevalence of mass shootings by youths—two of the suspects in the shooting that marred the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade are juveniles, police have said—police and prosecutors, desperate to prevent further carnage, will be tempted t...

What People Get Wrong About Wayne LaPierre’s Time at the NRA

Image
L ast month, after more than three decades as the figurehead of the modern gun lobby, longtime National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO and executive VP Wayne LaPierre stepped down. His departure comes amid a civil corruption lawsuit brought by the State of New York, which alleges that the NRA and its executives violated their non-profit status and various state and federal laws, as well as grossly mismanaging the group’s finances. LaPierre stands at the heart of a popular narrative about the recent emergence of the radical right. He has loomed large in the organization’s changing tactics and emphasis as it evolved into a political powerhouse and an uncompromising foe of all gun control. As the story goes, the NRA was a moderate group focused on sport and target shooting before the “Cincinnati Coup” in 1977. The revolt at the group’s annual convention ushered hardliners into power and drove the reshaping of gun Politics in the U.S., including the rise of a new interpretation that the Sec...
