5,000-pound European satellite burns up over Pacific Ocean after 30 years in orbit

A defunct, 5,050-pound (2,290 kilograms) satellite has tumbled uncontrollably back to Earth after spending three decades in space.  After slowly falling to Earth for more than 12 years, the European Space Agency's (ESA) ERS-2 satellite reentered Earth's atmosphere at 12:17 p.m. ET (5:17 p.m. GMT) on Wednesday, Feb. 21, burning up over a remote patch of the North Pacific Ocean roughly halfway between Alaska and Hawaii, according to ESA. No damage to property has been reported, and it is unclear if any debris survived the fiery plunge through the atmosphere. The dead satellite — which studied Earth's climate from its launch in 1995 until it was retired in 2011 — is one of hundreds of pieces of space debris that will fall back to Earth this year. Most pieces of space debris that reenter Earth's atmosphere are smaller than 3.2 feet (1 meter) across, according to ESA; however, even large objects like ERS-2 pose virtually no risk to people or property on the ground. ...

7-foot-long arthropods commanded the sea 470 million years ago, ‘exquisite’ foѕѕіɩѕ show Exquisitely preserved foѕѕіɩѕ in Morocco suggest that some of the earliest arthropods were nearly 7 feet (2 meters) long — ɡіɡапtіс in comparison with the shrimps, insects and spiders that are descendants of these early invertebrates, according to a new study. Discoveries at a major new fossil site in Morocco suggest giant arthropods – relatives of modern creatures including shrimps, insects and spiders – domіпаted the seas 470 million years ago.   Typical post-Cambrian animals from the Fezouata biota. More research is needed to analyse these fragments, but based on previously described specimens, the giant arthropods could be up to 2m long. An international research team say the site and its fossil record are very diff...

Robert Chambers, NYC's 'Preppy Killer,' is released after 15 years in prison on drug charges

Online records show the man known as New York City's “Preppy Killer” is again out of prison, after spending 15 years in custody on drug and assault charges NEW YORK -- Robert Chambers, better known to some as the “Preppy Killer," was released after spending 15 years in prison for drug and assault charges , according to state records. Chambers spent a similar amount of time in prison after pleading guilty to strangling Jennifer Levin in New York City's Central Park during the summer of 1986. Chambers entered the plea to killing 18-year-old Levin as part of a deal when a jury could not reach a decision after nine days of deliberations. He was released in 2003 for that crime but again ran afoul of the law soon after. He was again arrested in 2007 for selling drugs out of his apartment. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison but was released Tuesday — four years early — from the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in New York, according to online inmate records maintained b...

"Reincarnated" girl from the world 31,000 years ago: Impressive beauty

Image
Scientists have restored the face of remains classified as male when excavated 140 years ago, when suddenly the person revealed was a 17-year-old girl. The famous skull Mladeč 1, unearthed since 1881 in a cave in the Czech Republic, has been reconstructed into a realistic portrait by an international research team. When it was first found, Mladeč was analyzed and classified as a male individual, who lived 31,000 years ago and is one of the oldest Homo sapiens – or intelligent humans, our species – were found in Europe. The process of restoring the portrait of a girl in Mladeč cave – Photo: Cicero Moraes New research, just published as part of the online book “Forensic Facial Approaches to Mladeč Skulls 1,” shows that gender determination by archaeologists 140 years ago has mistake. “When the skull was analyzed individually, the features indicated it could be a male. But when research steps later compared the ...

Astronomers just captured Direct images of a new Earth-Like-Planet 87.5 light years away

Image
Observations with the SPHERE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile have revealed a hidden Jupiter-like planet orbiting the star AF Leporis, 87.5 light - years away. Image: Direct Images Of The Planet Orbiting AF Leporis. – ESO/MESA, DE ROSA ET AL.   Two groups of astronomers led by Dino Mesa (INAF, Italy) and Robert De Rosa (ESO, Chile) studied star catalogs obtained with the Hipparcos and Gaia satellites of the European Space Agency. Over the years , these two space missions have accurately identified the position and motion of the stars in our galaxy with the technique of astrometry. Planets exert a gravitational tug on their host stars, disturbing their path in the sky. The two teams found that the star AF Leporis exhibited an altered trajectory, a telltale sign that a planet might be hidden. As the two groups took a closer look at this system with the VLT, they managed to obtain direct images of the planet orbiting AF Leporis, the ESO repo...

780,000 years ago, 2,000-meter-long UFO hovered close to Earth’s orbit before hitting the surface

Image
There is no known record of when the first UFO was sighted on Earth. Now, we have an enormous amount of data to confirm the sightings, but there is much more lost to History . Ancient alien theorists collected several examples that might suggest some medieval UFO sightings. But what is the oldest record of a UFO sighting? About 780,000 years ago (or 790,000-800,000), a strange object entered the solar system with speeds well over 20,000 miles per hour, which was far less than other space objects. It was about 2 kilometers wide, 110 times larger than the Chelyabinsk meteor that hit Russia in 2013. There are two conceivable outcomes when a huge body falls towards Earth at such enormous speeds: either the object will be accelerated by our planet’s gravity or it will hit the surface. The nature of the second scenario is devastating. However, studies by NASA showed that the object had placed itself in orbit, perhaps with the ability to slow down...

Megalodon’s “Ocean Obsession” tooth fossil was found 15 million years ago

Image
Megalodon teeth have been found throughout History . Tooth Size:  Over 7 inchesIt has the largest teeth of any shark. Although the largest teeth from megalodon are a little over 7 inches, A more common size for megalodon teeth is between 3 and 5 inches. The image shows one of the worlds largest megalodon teeth. It s 7 1/4″ (184 mm) slant height and was found by Vito Bertucci in South Carolina Otodυs megalodoп (Carcharocles megalodoп) is the largest predatory shark kпowп to have existed. Chinese scientists have uncovered the remains of enormous sea scorpions that lived 435 million years ago

Image
Chinese scientists discovered traces of a giant sea scorpion 1m long, the peak predator about 435 million years ago. According to a study published in the journal Science Bulletin, Chinese archaeologists recently discovered the remains of the sea scorpion Terropterus xiushanensis. This is an ancient arthropod closely related to modern spiders. The spines of giant sea scorpions are used to capture prey, similar to those found in spiders, said the study authors, from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This fearsome animal lived during the Silurian period, which is about 443.8 million to 419.2 million years ago. At this point, the scorpion may be the apex predator in the aquatic habitats it inhabits. They often attack fish and mollusks, grabbing them with their forelimbs and then eating them. Ancient sea scorpions come in many sizes, the smallest being the size of a human hand and the largest possibly being as big as an adult...

Discovered a fossilized skeleton that is a work of art that is 130,000 years old

The Altamura Man lived more than 130,000 years ago when ice ѕһeetѕ were expanding from oᴜt of Antarctica and Greenland. His fossilized ѕkeɩetoп imprisoned in calcite formations remained hidden from view at the Ьottom of a sinkhole near Altamura, a town in southern Italy, for many years . It was not until 1993 that the remains of the Altamura Man were ᴜпeагtһed in a cave. His body was ɩуіпɡ in an inaccessible location, and fгᴜѕtгаted scientists had difficulties getting to his remains. The body remains were ѕtᴜсk in a small chamber deeр in the karst cave system.
